What Is Wisdom Tooth Extraction?
The third set of molars, usually called the wisdom teeth, are a common source of discomfort for many people. Found in the rear region of each arch, the wisdom teeth often don't have the room they need to erupt from the gums efficiently, causing them to become trapped and difficult to care for. This can lead to serious oral health complications over time by shifting the other teeth out of place and creating pockets for bacteria to grow. At Oral Surgery Associates Gadsden, Drs. Cecil Dorsett and Frank E. Orr have extensive experience with tooth extractions, including wisdom tooth removal, tailoring each treatment to the needs of their patients. If you are struggling with discomfort due to misaligned or impacted wisdom teeth, we encourage you to schedule a consultation at our offices in Gadsden and Albertville, AL to learn about your options for wisdom tooth extraction.
How Do You Perform Wisdom Tooth Extraction?
Wisdom tooth removal is performed at Oral Surgery Associates Gadsden using a combination of local anesthesia and nitrous oxide or IV sedation. Once you're comfortable, Dr. Dorsett or Dr. Orr will make an incision in the gums to access the tooth and extract it. In many cases, a wisdom tooth may need to be broken down into smaller sections, especially if the tooth is impacted or has misshapen roots. After removing the tooth, they'll stitch the area closed. Depending on your situation, we may remove all of your wisdom teeth in a single appointment to limit your recovery time as much as possible.
Before you leave, we'll provide detailed aftercare instructions to ensure a smoother recovery. Healing after wisdom tooth extraction can take 1 – 2 weeks, during which time you may notice swelling, discomfort, and bruising around the extraction site. You can manage any discomfort with over-the-counter pain medications. While recovering, you should eat soft foods and be gentle when cleaning your teeth. You should avoid smoking or straws, both of which might loosen blood clots in your mouth and interfere with healing.
What Are the Benefits of Wisdom Tooth Extraction?
If you're dealing with wisdom teeth that are causing pain or could cause problems in the future, having them removed can make a big difference in your oral health. It helps relieve discomfort and prevents future complications, leaving you with a healthier smile. Here are the main benefits of wisdom tooth removal:
- Alleviates pain and discomfort
- Prevents damage to nearby teeth
- Reduces the risk of infection
- Prevents cysts and tumors
- Improves oral hygiene
- Prepares for orthodontic treatment
- Reduces the risk of gum disease
Wisdom Tooth Removal Reviews
Dorset did a number on me but was very effective!! Love the guy!! He was a little rough but he got in got it done and I was out in maybe 15 minutes.. Guy deserves a steak dinner!! Well done Doc!! You have no complaints from me!! Highly recommended!!! 2 wisdom teeth and one very loose with bone loss.
Super-professional, kind people. They take some of the terror out of extractions and implants.
I put off getting my wisdom teeth out for years because I was terrified. I called another local doctor and they couldn’t get me in for a consultation until May. I called Gadsden Oral Associates and had a consult two days later. Then was scheduled 2 weeks later to have all four wisdom teeth removed. Dr. Nimmich and his staff were amazing. I didn’t feel a thing and recovery has been surprisingly easy. I definitely recommend Gadsden Oral Associates!
I came here for a wisdom teeth extraction and it was the smoothest experience ever! Dr.Matt and his team were very nice and professional. As someone with severe dental anxiety they helped keep me calm and comfortable. 10/10 would definitely recommend Gadsden and Albertville office.
I had an amazing experience getting my wisdom tooth removed. This was my first time ever having any dental work done (I didn’t even have my first cavity until age 32), so I honestly didn’t know what to expect but they made me feel so comfortable from start to finish. Check in was super easy with no confusion at all. My appointment was at 8:30, I arrived at 8:00, and they actually called me back early. Everything moved quickly and smoothly I was completely done before 8:50! The staff was incredibly kind and welcoming, and the doctor took the time to explain everything, which I really appreciated. The last thing I remember is the assistant saying she was about to give me the medicine, and after that, I don’t remember a thing which made the whole experience even better. Overall, they were absolutely perfect. I highly recommend them to anyone, especially if you’re nervous or don’t know what to expect like I didn’t.

Who is a candidate for wisdom tooth removal?
Wisdom tooth removal is often recommended when these teeth are unlikely to erupt properly or are already causing problems. Even before symptoms develop, removal may be advised to prevent complications. Candidacy depends on positioning, space, and risk of future issues. Generally speaking, you or your child may be a candidate for wisdom tooth removal if you/they have:
- Impacted teeth
- Limited space
- Gum irritation
- Jaw discomfort
- Alignment concerns
Patients should be healthy enough for a routine surgical procedure. Our team will assess timing and positioning to determine when removal is most beneficial.
