Do Wisdom Teeth Always Need to Be Removed?

At Oral Surgery Associates Gadsden, our skilled oral and maxillofacial surgeons in Gadsden and Albertville, AL understand why some patients may have questions or even concerns about when it is necessary to remove wisdom teeth — and why. Because the decision about whether to remove wisdom tooth relies heavily on patient-specific criteria and considerations, the answer isn't always black and white. In some cases, fully erupted wisdom teeth may pose no problem by remaining in the mouth, while a partially erupted wisdom tooth or an impacted wisdom tooth will likely need to be removed.

Again, each case is unique, and our team will help you evaluate whether wisdom tooth removal is medically necessary or if monitoring is a safe, effective option. Take a closer look here at when wisdom teeth should be removed and why some people keep their wisdom teeth longer than others — or even indefinitely.

When is it safe to keep your wisdom teeth?

While many patients assume removing wisdom teeth is inevitable, there are scenarios where preserving wisdom teeth is both safe and practical. Generally speaking, our team may recommend keeping your wisdom teeth if they are:

  • Fully erupted, functional, and easy to keep clean
  • Correctly aligned without crowding or shifting adjacent teeth
  • Free from decay, infection, cysts, or gum inflammation

If these conditions are met, and you commit to regular dental check-ups, keeping your wisdom teeth may be an appropriate choice — at least for the time being.

When should wisdom teeth be removed?

While keeping your wisdom teeth may be okay for a period of time, there are situations where preventive wisdom tooth removal certainly makes sense, like when wisdom teeth are impacted, partially erupted, causing spacing issues, or causing painful or disruptive oral health and functional issues. In such cases, our team may recommend wisdom tooth extraction to protect your overall oral health, even before symptoms appear.

What should I know before wisdom teeth removal?

If wisdom tooth extraction is determined to be the most appropriate choice possible, our surgeons will first conduct a thorough consultation to answer your questions and walk through your options, as well as what to expect when having wisdom teeth removed, in greater detail. Some of the things discussed during a wisdom teeth removal consultation may include:

  • Your anesthesia options, from local anesthesia to IV sedation, based on your preferences and procedure needs
  • Detailed preoperative instructions to help you prepare for a smooth experience
  • Postoperative follow-up to monitor healing, manage discomfort, and ensure a safe recovery after wisdom tooth removal

Whether you need your wisdom teeth removed or you're looking into the possibility of wisdom teeth removal for a teenager or young adult, we are here to help you better understand if, when, and why extraction may be the right option for your short- and long-term oral health.

This oral surgeon did an amazing job. To my surprise he removed all 4 of my child's wisdom teeth in 40 mins. or less. The nurses took very good care of my kiddo. Two nurses walked her out the back door. They're very professional, respectful, kind, & very patient. The receptionist at the front desk was really kind & very informative. Thank you so much. I highly recommend this place.

I just wanted to share my experience with Oral Surgery Associates in Albertville. I had my procedure done on July 14th, 2025 which involved the removal of two of my top teeth and I will say that I am on blood thinner which makes things a little complicated. From the beginning of my consultation to the day I had my teeth pulled Nikki that works in the office went above and beyond to help me with anything I needed and helped calm my nerves. During my procedure Dr. Nimmich also went above and beyond to help me and made sure that I took all the precautions that I needed since I was on blood thinner and he made the procedure go easier for me just knowing that he cared about my health and wanted the procedure to go smooth as possible. Also Anna which was one of the assistants was so great in helping me stay calm. I will definitely be using them again for any future Oral Surgery needs. I highly recommend them for any of your Oral Surgery needs. Thank you to all of you for making this procedure easier for me just by showing you care.
