What Are Tooth Extractions?

Contact our offices in Gadsden and Albertville, AL today to learn more about your options for simple and surgical tooth extraction.
How Do You Perform Tooth Extractions?
We perform tooth extractions in-office with local anesthesia for your comfort. Based on your needs, we can also provide IV sedation or other options to keep you relaxed throughout your treatment. For a simple extraction, the tooth will be loosened using a specialized tool called an "elevator" before removal. A surgical extraction (usually done for wisdom teeth) involves making incisions in the gums to access the tooth. In some cases, the tooth may need to be broken into smaller pieces for removal. After the tooth is extracted, sutures will be used to close the gum incision. If you are planning on future dental implants, we can also use this opportunity to insert a bone graft for additional jaw support (a procedure called "socket preservation").
The recovery process after your tooth extraction will depend on the complexity of your surgery. Simple tooth extractions will start healing within a few days, while surgical extractions could take weeks or months. After tooth extraction, it's important to stick to soft foods, such as yogurt, smoothies, or soup, while the area heals. You should also avoid spicy foods, smoking, and using straws, all of which could aggravate your mouth or dislodge a blood clot.
What Are the Benefits of Tooth Extractions?
The thought of having a tooth removed is never pleasant, but at Oral Surgery Associates Gadsden, we make the process as comfortable and straightforward as possible. When you have an injured, decayed, or badly misaligned tooth, an extraction may be the best thing we can do to protect your oral health. The benefits of tooth extraction include:
- Alleviating pain and discomfort from damaged or decayed teeth
- Preventing further oral health complications, such as infections or misalignment
- Improving oral hygiene by removing teeth that may be difficult to clean properly
- Creating space for orthodontic treatments like braces or dental implants
- Supporting long-term dental health by addressing problem teeth before they cause more damage
- Enhancing your smile by removing unsightly or problematic teeth
Tooth Extractions Reviews
I experience terrible anxiety before any procedure. They were very sympathetic to my plight and were very mindful of my situation. It was quick, but didn’t seem rushed. The ladies in the office are the very best. So kind and easygoing. I am finally rid of my top, jacked up wisdom teeth. I hope I never need another oral procedure as long as I live, but if so, I’ll go to OSA, no doubt. Also, give that gorgeous redhead a raise. Susie is the awesome-sauce. :)
There are not enough words to describe the outstanding personable care my young adult daughter received from the Dr. and staff at OSC Associates in Albertville. She had a dental emergency that was misdiagnosed as needing wisdom teeth extractions. First of all they were able to see her the next day when we called needing an appointment. She was in excruciating pain and they worked her in at the last minute. After an x ray and consultation with the Dr. it was determined that she did not need an extraction but a root canal. They set up an appointment with a dentist that could perform the procedure AND DID NOT CHARGE US FOR THE VISIT. It almost made me cry because she does not have insurance as she works in the service industry. I am overwhelmed with the generosity and so appreciative that no words can describe. With this economy today being so expensive I cannot say enough about the genuine patient care given to my daughter. This kind of patient care is hard to come by these days. Thank you so much OSC for putting a smile back on my daughter’s face.
Got me in quickly for surgery, did an amazing job extracting my wisdom tooth, almost no pain afterwards, no bleeding.
Excellent choice for oral Surgery. They removed 4 wisdom teeth and don't remember anything about the surgery. They kept pain from occurring during and after the procedure. And they care about their patients!
If anyone needs oral surgery in the Gadsden area, I highly recommend Dr. Dorsett and his team at Oral Surgery Associates in Gadsden!! They were very professional and made the entire process effortless. I had 2 wisdom teeth and a molar extracted and even though it was not a simple extraction, recovery has been almost painless!! I’m now 3 days post op and have only had to take ibuprofen once!

Frequently Asked Questions
What can I eat after a tooth extraction?
Stick to soft foods like yogurt, smoothies, soup, or mashed potatoes for the first few days. Avoid hot, spicy, or crunchy foods, as well as smoking or using straws, which can delay healing or dislodge the blood clot. Dr. Dorsett or Dr. Orr will guide you on when to safely reintroduce solid foods.
Can I drive home after the procedure?
If you receive IV sedation or general anesthesia, you will need someone to drive you home, as you may feel drowsy or disoriented afterward. For procedures using only local anesthesia, you should be able to drive home safely. Our team members at Oral Surgery Associates Gadsden can advise you based on your specific treatment plan.
How should I manage pain after a tooth extraction?
Mild pain and swelling can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen and a cold compress. For more complex extractions, our staff in Gadsden and Albertville, AL, may prescribe medication for additional relief. Be sure to follow all aftercare instructions to minimize discomfort.
