If you're scheduled for wisdom tooth removal for your third molars, it's normal to feel unsure about what recovery will be like. Knowing what to expect after surgery can make the healing process feel much more manageable.

At Oral Surgery Associates Gadsden, serving Gadsden and Albertville, AL, our team prepares patients for each stage of recovery with personalized guidance and expert care. If you have questions about sedation dentistry or want to know what to eat after wisdom teeth removal, call today to schedule a consultation.

Days 1 and 2: The most critical stage

The first two days after wisdom tooth removal set the stage for your recovery. Expect swelling, soreness, and some bleeding as your body begins to heal from oral surgery. If you opted for sedation dentistry, you might also feel groggy and need someone to assist you at home. Blood clots will form at the extraction sites, and protecting them is essential during this window.

Rest as much as possible and keep your head elevated, even while sleeping. Take prescribed medications on schedule and avoid any activity that raises your heart rate, as this can increase bleeding and discomfort.

Steer clear of straws, forceful spitting, and rinsing during the first 24 hours. These actions can dislodge the clots and lead to complications, like dry socket.

Days 3 and 4: Swelling peaks and begins to subside

For most patients, swelling reaches its peak around day three before gradually improving. You may also notice some bruising along your jaw and cheeks, which is normal. Switch from ice to warm compresses to help ease any lingering tightness.

Any pain you feel should become more manageable. If discomfort is increasing rather than decreasing, contact our office, as this can be a sign of dry socket or infection. Continue rinsing gently with warm salt water after meals and avoid disturbing the extraction sites with your tongue or fingers.

Days 5, 6, and beyond: Feeling like yourself again

By day five or six, most patients feel significantly better. Swelling and bruising continue to fade, and your energy levels should return. You can gradually increase your activities, though avoid strenuous exercise or heavy lifting until our team gives the go-ahead.

The extraction sites will continue to close and heal over the following weeks. Remember to attend all scheduled follow-up appointments so we can confirm everything is progressing well.

What to eat after wisdom teeth removal

Nutrition plays a bigger role in recovery than most people realize. After removing your third molars, choosing the right foods helps your body heal faster and reduces irritation at the extraction sites. We may recommend yogurt, applesauce, broth, smoothies, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, and oatmeal throughout your recovery journey.

However, avoid anything hard, crunchy, spicy, or sticky. Skip alcohol and carbonated drinks as well, since both can irritate healing tissue and slow the healing process.

I experience terrible anxiety before any procedure. They were very sympathetic to my plight and were very mindful of my situation. It was quick, but didn’t seem rushed. The ladies in the office are the very best. So kind and easygoing. I am finally rid of my top, jacked up wisdom teeth. I hope I never need another oral procedure as long as I live, but if so, I’ll go to OSA, no doubt. Also, give that gorgeous redhead a raise. Susie is the awesome-sauce. :)

Dr Dorsett is the best dentist I’ve ever been to. I had no insurance and his price was very reasonable as well.
