What Is A Dental Bone Graft?
If your jawbone has been weakened due to missing teeth or injury, bone grafting can help restore its strength and functionality. This procedure, also known as osseous surgery, is essential for ensuring your jaw can properly support both natural teeth and dental implants. Bone grafting works by rebuilding the bone, making it strong enough to securely hold implants and other dental restorations. At Oral Surgery Associates Gadsden, we specialize in bone grafting to prepare your jaw for future implant surgery, improving both the health and stability of your jaw. If you live near Gadsden or Albertville, AL, schedule a consultation with Dr. Cecil Dorsett or Dr. Frank E. Orr to discuss how dental bone grafting can help restore your smile.
How Does A Dental Bone Graft Work?
Dr. Dorsett or Dr. Orr will begin your bone graft by numbing the area with local anesthesia to ensure you are comfortable. If needed, we can also provide nitrous oxide sedation to help you relax throughout the procedure. Your surgeon will make a small incision in your gum tissue to access the bone and place the bone graft, which may be sourced from your own body (autograft), another person (allograft), an animal (xenograft), or synthetic material (alloplast), depending on your specific needs. The graft will be carefully secured with collagen and proteins to promote healing and integration. Once the graft is in place, the incision will be closed with sutures, and the area will be cleaned. Most patients experience only mild discomfort during the recovery period, and with proper care, many can return to their regular activities after a few days. Once the graft has healed and the bone has integrated, we will invite you back to our offices in Gadsden and Albertville, AL to finish your smile with custom dental implants.

Oral Surgery Associates Gadsden Reviews
They were very friendly, I definitely felt comfortable and taken care of.
Anna and Dr. Dorsett were both great. They were understanding, informative, patient, and caring.
Very professional staff and the doctors
Very professional and caring staff. Dr.Dorsett was a life saver & was able to work me in the next day. I'd made it for 4 days so 1 more, I was able to bareI I was in excruciating pain with a broken molar & he extracted it with ease. I was overwhelmed with how much time he spent explaining every step of the procedure as it was being conducted. From the pressure of him working quickly to the crunching of him pulling it out, it was really a welcoming feeling knowing that relief and healing was soon to follow! I'm one of those people that are extremely terrified of dentists. I'd never experienced anything like this before & he was very knowledgeable in working around my TMJ. After my jaw dislocated, which is unfortunately a normal occurrence with me, he quickly was able to reset it without causing me additional pain or discomfort. Professionals like Dr.Dorsett are a rare find. I would never even consider going anywhere else for any oral surgery needs. I'd like to add, all of his staff from the time of check in to the exam room & even checking out were not only helpful and patient but understanding and nice enough to put up with me! That in itself is NOT an easy job! Thanks to the whole crew @ OSA!!! You guys ROCK! Hopefully, I won't have to see them again for a long while but, I know they're there when I need them!
Very efficient and friendly.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long is the recovery time after a bone graft?
Bone graft healing doesn’t happen overnight, it usually takes at least four months for the new bone to fully bond with your jaw. During this time, your bone grafting specialist will monitor your progress closely and determine when you’re ready to move forward with a dental implant or restoration.
What are the sources of bone grafting material?
Bone grafts can come from several different sources, depending on your needs and your provider’s recommendation. These include your own bone (autograft), donor bone from another person (allograft), bone from an animal source (xenograft), or lab-made synthetic materials (alloplast). Your dental provider will explain the benefits of each and help you choose the option that’s best for your treatment plan.
Will I need to follow a special diet after a bone graft?
Yes, sticking to a soft food diet is important after bone grafting to protect the surgical site. Try to avoid crunchy or chewy items like nuts, chips, or sticky candy, and make sure to chew on the opposite side of your mouth. If you’re unsure about what foods are safe, our team can provide personalized dietary guidance.
